The biggest challenge for any professional custom motorcycle builder is not creating the most extreme look for a show, but ensuring that this work of art remains safe and street legal. In many countries, road safety regulations are very strict and cannot be compromised for the safety of the rider and other road users.
To meet roadworthiness standards, a custom motorcycle must be equipped with fully functioning safety equipment. This includes a headlight with adequate range, front and rear turn signals, dual side mirrors, and a brake light that shines brightly when the brakes are applied. Additionally, the braking system must be designed with sufficient hydraulic capacity to stop the motorcycle, which is often heavier than stock bikes due to massive custom frames and wheels.
Another crucial factor is the vehicle identification number (VIN) registered with the authorities. When builders chop an old frame or build a new one from scratch, they must register the chassis through official safety inspections to obtain a roadworthiness certificate. Complying with road legal regulations ensures that the owner can enjoy their custom motorcycle peacefully without worrying about traffic citations.
